In response to Vince's recent post about how lots people in S'pore don't really speak their own language but english nowadays. It is sad cause that not only happens in S'pore but all around the word. I as a Malaysian Chinese, feels extremely lucky too to be multilingual, although we are incompetent in some ways with s'pore and many other countries, most of us still speak our own language, like for chinese, if not mandarin then at least some other dialects.
I guess in a way, we see language as a way to preserve our ethnic identity, the way to cling to the sense of belonging since we're the minority in the country. As if you don't speak the language, you're seen as a traitor, as a person that doesnt care about your own ethnicity, Maybe those people really don't care, they were not brought up the way we were, with a strong sense of ethnicity. Their parents wanted them to be "International" and presentable by being able to speak perfect english and their own language is being put aside and abandoned.
For those parents that still think that way, you don't have to speak only english to your children to enable them to speak good english and just so you know, multilingual is the new trend and not being able to speak your own mother tongue is embarrassing.
Oh, by the way...if you are to speak only english to your kids at home, do speak proper english and not Singlish or Manglish, you don't want them to hate you when they find how ridiculous they sound when they actually talk to a english native speaker. Plus, if you want them to speak good english, just let them watch more english channels on TV, and in no time, you'll find your kids speak better english than you do!
Often when chinese from other Mandarin speaking countries like Taiwan or Hong Kong that come to Malaysia are atonished when they find us capable of speaking mandarin or cantonese or both and more!
Honestly speaking, i think that's the only thing I'm proud of being a Malaysian. Our strong sense of ethnicity and multicultural society and being multiligual.Other than that....well...let's just say Malaysia has lots of things need to be worked on.
